AminoSweet

Aspartame, a known carcinogen, used as artificial sweetener has changed its name to AminoSweet, as a marketing ploy to save it from its previous persona . Aspartame was really first synthesized as an anti-ulcer drug, but worked its way thru FDA approval as a food additive.

If you are interested, here is a fuller article.

Aspartame has been Renamed and is Now Being Marketed as a Natural Sweetener | Health Freedom Alliance

Fascinating . One has to be so alert about anything “new.”

Agave nectar, for example:
Dr. Joseph Mercola: This Sweetener Is Far Worse Than High Fructose Corn Syrup

I’ll stab with stevia, thank you.

Is anyone is interested, read up on aspartame (Wikipedia will do). It has been the subject of much dread mongering and hoaxes, but is accepted as safe worldwide, including by the FDA. Then look up the Health Freedom Alliance and grasp they are a bunch of quacks (they are anti-vaccines, they claim lemon juice “cleanses the blood, liver and kidneys, etc., etc. etc.) Please folks, consider the source previous to posting junk medicine.

Yup, change the name to get around the rumours more like it.

You can find anything you want on the internet, especially around ‘health’. I dare you to name anything we ingest and I will find you the article that tells us to be very worried of it. Go ahead, i’ll show you.

I say show me the peer reviewed meta-systematic studies demonstrating its a carcinogen. Don’t get me incorrect, I’m not at all a defender of the FDA and the status quo. I was very involved in encouraging the ban on Bispenol-A in our country. I eat organic food when I can.

But for the most part, if I need to know something, I trust independent scientists and not some particular those with a belief or an agenda and access to a website.

This reminds me of this website:

Dihydrogen Monoxide Research Division – dihydrogen monoxide info

Beware the dangers of Dihydrogren Monoxide!!

Not sure if you will all get the joke but please read it and let me know.

Dihydrogen monoxide hahahaha, that’s like reading about the weird habits of the Nacirema.

I’ll stab with stevia, thank you.
Aspartame has been approved by the FDA as a food additive; stevia has not. Stevia is being sold as a dietary supplement — a category of products that is less strictly regulated than food additives.

I’ll stab with aspartame, thank you.

I just avoid sweeteners, natural or artificial.

This is a non-tale . Aspartame hasn’t been “renamed” AminoSweet. AminoSweet is just another trade name for the product, just like NutraSweet already is.

I would also say that to me, “AminoSweet” doesn’t sound particularly natural or appealing.

OP is just posting FUD with some sort of agenda. Excellent for the posters here in recognizing that!

Many people can tolerate aspartame, but others can’t. People with phenylketonuria certainly can’t.

My adult son started drinking beverages with aspartame and developed chronic headaches. When he stopped drinking that kind of beverage, the headaches stopped.

So many people have similar experiences that it’s trying to discount them.

I’d say that if you have absolutely no health issues at all, it probably would be fine to ingest aspartame. Others might reconsider.

Stevia comes from a South American shrub and has been used there for centuries; aspartame is an artificial concoction.

“In 2008, the FDA stated that the use of a refined stevia preparation called Rebiana is generally recognizable as safe, and can be used as a food ingredient. Products include, Excellent & Sweet, PureVia, Reb A, SweetLeaf Stevia Sweetener, Sun Crystals (which combines stevia and sugar), and Truvia.”

I’ve never understood why the fact that something has been used for centuries makes anyone reflect that it is safe.

This is a common misconception. People tend to equate “Natural” with “safe”. There are many natural substances that I would avoid at all costs, e.g., toxins produced by nautical organisms.

I’m not a fan of any non-absorbable sugar substitutes, but if one does not suffer from PKU, one has to eat a bowl full of Aspatame (and metabolize it all at once!) to ingest a lethal dose of methanol.

Are toxins produced by nautical organisms used in any kind of supplement or treatment?

I guess I can see how something being used for centuries would not recommend particular things (cocaine? opium?) but in general it seems to me to be a reasonable guideline when it comes to foods.

The Deceptive Marketing of Aspartame

Sold commercially under names like NutraSweet, Canderel, and now AminoSweet, aspartame can be found in more than 6,000 foods, including soft drinks, chewing gum, table-top sweeteners, diet and diabetic foods, breakfast cereals, jams, sweets, vitamins, prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

Aspartame producer Ajinomoto chose to rebrand it under the name AminoSweet, to “remind the industry that aspartame tastes just like sugar, and that it’s made from amino acids – the building blocks of protein that are abundant in our diet.”

This is deception at its finest: Begin with a shred of truth, and then spin it to fit your own agenda.
40/365: ASPARTAME...formaldehyde in a bottle.
In this case, the agenda is to make you believe that aspartame is somehow a harmless, natural sweetener made with two amino acids that are essential for health and present in your diet already.

They want you to believe aspartame delivers all the benefits of sugar and none of its drawbacks. But nothing could be further from the truth.

How Aspartame Wreaks Havoc on Your Health

Did you know there have been more reports to the FDA for aspartame reactions than for all other food additives combined?

In fact, there are over 10,000 official complaints, but by the FDA’s own admission, less than 1 percent of those who experience a reaction to a product ever report it. So in all likelihood, the toxic effects of aspartame may have affected roughly a million people already.

While a variety of symptoms have been reported, almost two-thirds of them fall into the neurological and behavioral category consisting mostly of headaches, mood alterations, and hallucinations. The remaining third is mostly gastrointestinal symptoms.

This video will familiarize you with some of the terrifying side-effects and health problems you could encounter if you consume products containing this chemical.

Unfortunately, aspartame toxicity is not well-known by doctors, despite its frequency. Diagnosis is also hampered by the fact that it mimics several other common health conditions, such as:

Multiple sclerosis
Alzheimer’s disease
Arthritis
Chronic fatigue syndrome
Panic disorder
Lupus
Birth defects
Lyme disease
Parkinson’s disease
Hypothyroidism
Lymphoma
Diabetes and diabetic complications
Depression and other psychological disorders
Attention deficit disorder
Multiple chemical sensitivity

How Diet Foods and Drinks Cause Weight Problems

In recent years, food manufacturers have increasingly focused on developing low-calorie foods and drinks to help you maintain a healthy weight and avoid obesity. Unfortunately, the science behind these products is so flawed; most of these products can actually lead to increased weight gain!

For example, researchers have discovered that drinking diet soda increases your risk of metabolic syndrome, and may double your risk of obesity – the complete opposite of the stated intention behind these “zero calorie” drinks.

The sad truth is that diet foods and drinks ruin your body’s ability to count calories, and in fact stimulate your appetite, thus boosting your inclination to overindulge.

Unfortunately, most public health agencies and nutritionists in the United States recommend these toxic artificial sweeteners as an acceptable alternative to sugar, which is at best confusing and at worst harming the health of those who take their misguided advice.

Truly, there is enough evidence showing the dangers of consuming artificial sweeteners to fill an entire book — which is exactly why I wrote Sweet Deception. If you or your loved ones drink diet beverages or eat diet foods, this book will explain how you’ve been deceived about the truth behind artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose — for greed, for profits, and at the expense of your health.

As mentioned earlier, almost two-thirds of all documented side effects of aspartame consumption are neurological.

One of the reasons for this side effect, researchers have discovered, is because the phenylalanine in aspartame dissociates from the ester bond. While these amino acids are indeed completely natural and safe, they were never designed to be ingested as isolated amino acids in massive quantities, which in and of itself will cause complications.

Additionally this will also increase dopamine levels in your brain. This can lead to symptoms of depression because it distorts your serotonin/dopamine balance. It can also lead to migraine headaches and brain tumors through a similar mechanism.

The aspartic acid in aspartame is a well-documented excitotoxin. Excitotoxins are usually amino acids, such as glutamate and aspartate. These special amino acids cause particular brain cells to become excessively excited, to the point that they die.

Excitotoxins can also cause a loss of brain synapses and connecting fibers. A review conducted in 2008 by scientists from the University of Pretoria and the University of Limpopo found that consuming a lot of aspartame may inhibit the ability of enzymes in your brain to function normally, and may lead to neurodegeneration.

According to the researchers, consuming a lot of aspartame can disturb:

The metabolism of amino acids
Protein structure and metabolism
The integrity of nucleic acids
Neuronal function
Endocrine balances

Furthermore, the ester bond in aspartame breaks down to formaldehyde and methanol, which are also toxic in their own right. So it is not surprising that this popular artificial sweetener has also been found to cause cancer.

One truly compelling case study that shows this all too well was done by a private citizen named Victoria Inness-Brown. She decided to perform her own aspartame experiment on 108 rats over a period of 2 years and 8 months.

Daily, she fed some of the rats the equivalent (for their body weight) of two-thirds the aspartame contained in 8-oz of diet soda. Thirty-seven percent of the females fed aspartame developed tumors, some of massive size.

Non-Acceptable Alternative Sweeteners

I have written a few articles on fructose earlier this year, and I will be writing many more, so please be aware that I am absolutely convinced that fructose ingestion is at the core of our obesity epidemic.

And I’m not only talking about high fructose corn syrup, which is virtually identical to table sugar. The only major difference between the two is HFCS is much cheaper so it has contributed to massive increase in fructose ingestion, far beyond safe or healthy.

Please understand you need to keep your fructose levels BELOW 25 grams per day. The best way to do that is to avoid these “natural” sweeteners as they are loaded with a much higher percentage of fructose than HFCS.

Fruit Juice
Agave
Honey

Please note that avoiding these beyond 25 grams per day is crucial, even if the source is fresh, raw, and organic. It just doesn’t matter; fructose is fructose is fructose…

Acceptable Alternative Sweeteners

For those times when you just want a taste of something sweet, your healthiest alternative is Stevia. It’s a natural plant and, unlike aspartame and other artificial sweeteners that have been cited for dangerous toxicities, it is a safe, natural alternative that’s ideal if you’re watching your weight, or if you’re maintaining your health by avoiding sugar.

It is hundreds of times sweeter than sugar and truly has virtually no calories.

I must tell you that I am biased; I prefer Stevia as my sweetener of choice, and I frequently use it. However, like most choices, especially sweeteners, I recommend using Stevia in moderation, just like sugar. In excess it is still far less likely to cause metabolic problems than sugar or any of the artificial sweeteners.

I want to emphasize, that if you have insulin issues, I suggest that you avoid sweeteners altogether, including Stevia, as they all can decrease your sensitivity to insulin.

Lo han is another sweetener like Stevia. It’s an African sweet herb that can also be used, but it’s a bit more expensive and harder to find.

So if you struggle with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or extra weight, then you have insulin sensitivity issues and would benefit from avoiding ALL sweeteners.

But for everyone else, if you are going to sweeten your foods and beverages anyway, I strongly encourage you to consider using regular Stevia or Lo han, and toss out all artificial sweeteners and any products that contain them.

If you have experienced an adverse reaction to any aspartame product, call the FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator in your area.

Consumer Group Endorses Study Showing How Diet Drinks Can Trigger Heart Attacks, Stroke and Diabetes

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) July 27, 2007

Authors of a major study published this week in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, found that one or more sodas per day increases risk of new-onset metabolic syndrome (a cluster of factors that boosts the chance of having a heart attack or stroke and developing diabetes) by about 45 per cent. “It did not seem to matter if the soda was regular or diet,” Dr. Ramachandran Vasan, senior investigator for the Framingham Heart Study, said Monday from Boston.

Aspartame Consumer Safety Network, a U.S. consumer group, with international affiliations, has published information for over two decades, supporting the findings of the Boston researchers. The group’s files contain thousands of adverse reactions to the artificial sweetener, aspartame (aka NutraSweet, Equal, Canderel). Aspartame in diet sodas, breaks down into: phenylalanine, methanol, aspartic acid, formaldehyde, formic acid and diketopiperazine, a brain tumor agent. In independent testing, aspartame caused brain tumors, breast tumors, grand mal seizures, pancreatic tumors, uterine tumors, leukemia and lymphoma, ACSN’s pilot hotline has logged close to one thousand pilot related calls regarding pilot’s adverse reactions to the sweetener.

Sunday, marks ACSN’s 20th Anniversary of all-volunteer service to the public. Founders, James Turner, Esq. of Washington, D.C. and broadcast journalist, Mary Nash Stoddard, of Dallas, Texas, have been recognized for significant contributions in the area of food safety and for documenting the risk factors, including heart, stroke and metabolic problems, associated with aspartame consumption.

Many prominent researchers and doctors, such as the late Dr. Robert Atkins concur with the network’s findings. Food and Drug Administration toxicologist, Dr. Jerome Bressler discovered unreported heart and other life threatening problems in the laboratory animals, showing how the original drug company tests could have been ‘falsified’ to gain approval for the sweetener.

Public figures, with histories of serious heart problems, who are also reported to be daily consumers of diet sodas include: President Bill Clinton (Diet Coke),Vice President, Dick Cheney (caffeine-free Diet Sprite) and television personality, Regis Philbin (Diet Coke).

Turner and Stoddard are campaigning for an aspartame recall, based on the latest research and dozens of independent scientific studies showing aspartame can not be regarded as “safe.”

The Irony of Better Living Through Chemistry

LOS ANGELES, CA (PRWEB) December 8, 2004

Last week Merisant, the US maker of chemically based artificial sweetener Equal and NutraSweet, took the marketer of sugar substitute Splenda McNeil Nutritionals to court, alleging advertising for the product is misleading. Equal filed a false advertising lawsuit claiming its hot-selling competitor, Splenda, isn’t really made from sugar at all, as its packaging claims.

In a complaint filed Friday in federal court in Philadelphia, Merisant Co. said Splenda’s marketing slogan, “made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar,” should probably read something like, “made from dextrose, maltodextrin and 4-chloro-4-deoxy-alpha, D-Galactopyranosyl-1, 6-dichloro-1, 6-dideoxy-beta, D-fructofuranoside.”

According to McNeil Nutritionals, sucralose the alleged sugar derivative starts off as pure cane sugar, and is then chemically altered in the manufacturing process to create a new compound with zero calories and 600 times sweeter than sugar.

Merisant said McNeil Nutritionals, the unit of Johnson & Johnson that markets Splenda, had misled consumers into thinking the artificial sweetener was “natural,” or made with raw sugar, when it is actually a synthesized and chlorinated chemical.

“In reality … there is no sugar in Splenda and Splenda’s sweet taste does not come from sugar,” the lawsuit said, “Splenda is not natural in any sense of the word. Instead, the truth about Splenda is that it is sweetened with a synthetic compound that is the result of a complex chemical process.”

McNeil Nutritionals spokeswoman Monica Neufang said the lawsuit has no merit.

“Splenda, “she insisted,” is not made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar but, we have never claimed that it is natural, nor would we. It is a sugar substitute,” Neufang said. “Consumers are not misled.”

Thom King, president of Steviva Brands, Inc., a producer and distributor of the natural sugar alternative Stevia, said “It is about time that Splenda be exposed for what it really is… better living through chemistry” King added, “The large pharmaceutical companies have been marketing chemically produced sweeteners to consumers for years”. King expressed relief that it’s the behemoth chemical companies that are going after each other rather than targeting small all natural companies like Steviva Brands, Inc. King, who’s company has been producing and distributing Steviva brand Stevia for over 8 years went on to state “The real irony is that Splenda targets low carb dieters, diabetics and persons sensitive to sugar when the main ingredient maltodextrin is not low carb or recommended by any of the very popular low carb diets and can spike insulin levels”.

More often than not disputes like the one between Equal and Splenda are often settled by the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureau. Merisant sought to have them intervene, but McNeil beat them to the punch and filed a lawsuit in a court in Puerto Rico last month, with the intention to have its advertising claims declared valid.

It is not clear yet whether the court in Puerto Rico or the court in Philadelphia will get final jurisdiction over the dispute.

Mean while Chicago-based Merisant asked the Philadelphia court to prohibit McNeil Nutritionals from making any further claims associating Splenda with sugar. It also asked a judge to order McNeil to pay unspecified cash damages, and to initiate a corrective advertising campaign clarifying that Splenda is a synthetic chemical.

Since its introduction in the United States in 2000, Splenda sales have soared. It has since passed Equal in the U.S. retail market for chemically based sugar substitutes.

Recipe for Pumpkin Seed Milk Alternative for People with Food Allergies Just in Time for Halloween

Recipe for Pumpkin Seed Milk Alternative for People with Food Allergies Just in Time for Halloween

(PRWEB) October 26, 2010

Nerissa Oden recently turned an almond milk recipe on its head when she used pumpkin seeds instead of almonds. She tried pumpkin seeds because she has food allergies to milk, soy, and nuts.

Like many Americans Nerissa has also discovered the advantages of avoiding rice and oat milk to reduce

her intake of sugar and gluten. “I can eat all types of seeds so why not make a milk from seeds instead of nuts?” And so she did. She even made a How To video and posted it on YouTube to show others just how fast and easy the process is.

People with food allergies will love this quick and easy homemade milk alternative to dairy and nuts. Seed milk is the perfect milk alternative for people with milk and nut allergies. Halloween is the perfect time for pumpkin seed milk. Children will love helping you make this 10 minute holiday recipe.

Homemade seed milk is healthier than store bought milk alternatives because you control the ingredients. It can be made unsweetened, or with a natural sugar substitute. It is also cost effective as it makes up to FOUR quarts for the same price of two store bought cartons. Use it instead of milk in all of your holiday recipes.

To make pumpkin seed milk you will need:

7 ounces of raw shelled pumpkin seeds
Large bowl with spout
Blender
Mesh strainer or colander
Nylon straining bag
Storage containers with lids
Filtered water 8-16 cups

Soak pumpkin seeds in filtered water overnight. In the morning, wash and rinse the seeds thoroughly. Put seeds to blender with 2 cups of filtered water. Blend until no visible seeds seen – about 30 seconds or minute depending on your blender. Over large bowl pour half blender contents into nylon bag. Add filtered water to bag. Twist bag top and gently squeeze. Add remaining contents from blender. Squeeze bag. Add filtered water until you have desired thickness of milk. You can also add 1-2 tablespoons of vanilla extract and any sweetener or sugar

substitute to taste. Some people also add salt. Makes 2-4 quarts.

Refrigerate.

Consumer Acceptance of Stevia in U.S. is On Par with Established Artificial Sweeteners, Reports NPD

Consumer Acceptance of Stevia in U.S. is On Par with Established Artificial Sweeteners, Reports NPD

(Vocus) July 19, 2010

Two years after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of the natural sweetener Stevia in foods and beverages; consumers’ acceptance of Stevia in their diets is comparable to their intentions to consume products with the artificial sweeteners Aspartame and sucralose, according to food and beverage market research conducted by The NPD Group, a leading market research company.

NPD’s Dieting Monitor, which continually examines top-of-mind dieting and nutrition-related issues facing consumers, began tracking consumer attitudes about Stevia, which is sold under a number of trade names including PureVia and Truvia, in August 2009. According to June data from the most recent Dieting Monitor, 35 percent of U.S. consumers said that they either already ate or would consider eating or drinking products or beverages that contain Stevia. This compares to 39 percent of consumers who said the same for aspartame, which is sold under the trade names Equal and Nutrasweet. Fifty-one percent of consumers said that they either already ate or would consider eating or drinking products or beverages that contain sucralose, which is sold under the trade name Splenda among others.

Foods and beverages using Stevia as a sugar substitute entered the market in 2009. Aspartame, which has recently been renamed “AmnioSweet,” has been in the marketplace for 15 years, and sucralose was introduced in 1999.
